The SMCU + was a low cost 1 to 3 axis motion controller which included a Programmable Logic Controller
with 20 outputs and 12 inputs. A lower specification unit was also available with 4 outputs and 4 inputs.
SMCU's could have been supplied with or without drives for either servo or stepper motors. Numerous pre-settable
system parameters permit SMCU's to be used in a wide range of Industrial Scientific and Commercial
applications. Pre-programmed SMCU's can also be supplied to perform from 1 to many predefined control
sequences.
Simple to use disk based PC compatible SMCU Remote Programming Software was supplied which was used to
both initially configure the SMCU to suit the machine being controlled and to download job programs via an
RS232 link. This software was also used to produce, edit, store, retrieve, print and validate job programs.
Features of the software included manual machine control from the computer keyboard, G and M code programming,
movements until predefined inputs operate, dwells from 0.01 to 650 seconds, conditional program execution
and graphical program validation. Once programmed the SMCU could be used independently.
Standard SMCU features included linear and circular interpolation, axis datum and overtravel inputs,
conditional program execution, programmable dwells, multi-program battery backed memory, and an 8 key manual
control keypad. Comprehensive in built self test and diagnostic features permit both the SMCU and machine
derived signals to be checked.
Applications that have used the SMCU include production equipment automation, automated component
manufacturing, automated equipment testing, and automated equipment calibration.
