NEE Controls Ltd Stepper Motor Controller Interface (SMOCI) was designed to enable
computer systems to control up to 3 axes of motor movement via an RS232 serial interface.
The S.M.O.C.I. was a unit giving computer users the ability to control up to 3 stepper motor
axes, operate 5 outputs and monitor the status of 2 inputs.
The SMOCI unit was used on a stepper motor system where precise movement, co-ordinates,
complex shapes, radii etc needed to be calculated or programmed from a remote "host" computer.
The SMOCI unit had some features which were very attractive to users of plotter systems for
example Window clipping, Automatic ellipse generation, built in ASCII character set with text written
at any angle, different line types and pen selection.
Two Axes could be used to provide linear and true circular movement. The 3rd axes could be
set to operate as an independent axis or could be used to control a motor to provide a tangential positioning
facility. Control is accomplished from a host computer or from a NEE Controls Ltd Programming
Aid/Workstation by using an easy to use interface language.
Additionally 5 outputs could be controlled and the status of 2 inputs could have been monitored.
